Facebook an addiction in young people

leave a comment »

Today, who doesn’t have facebook? Everybody is connecting to facebook either to chat with their friends or show their moods. Facebook is a common social network website that everybody is using. Facebook was created in 2004 with the intention of helping college students to get to know each other better. This website was created by some students at Harvard University.

The Facebook company announced in July 2010 that it had 500 million users around the world.  Facebook users are not only college students as the creators wanted them to be. Many of these users are young people between 15-17 or even younger. According to a study made by Inside Facebook, at the beginning of 2010, 11% of the facebook users were between the age of 13-17. This age range characterizes middle and high school students; not college students. At this age, children are unsure of many things on their lives; facebook helps them in certain way to develop their ideas faster than learning from their parents or other people. Nestor Ramirez, a facebook’s user, states “My older son is 14 years old, and he has facebook. He came from El Salvador a year ago and I let him have facebook to be in contact with his friends and relatives. He spends a lot of time chatting with people but more than chatting he plays games and dig into other people’s profile. Something that I dont like about facebook is that there are many adult stuff and all are within he reach of kids.”

Facebook can be a fun social network; but getting a facebook addiction can be destructive for kids that are developing their brains. According to Jennifer Fraser in her article Disadvantages of Facebok; “If kids are given too much time and freedom online, then they too will suffer socially, as well as spend too much time being inactive.  They’re health and well being will be negatively effected.”

A new way to capture your memories

leave a comment »

To write your daily livings, memories, or experiences is not something new. People have done it for many years. This is a tradition specially for females who love to write about their lovers, family, and friends. Young girls enjoying writing their love experiences on a journal. These journals are more especial than a writing little book.

Technology is advancing everyday, and computers are now more indispensable than necessary. These journals have computers’ connections; therefore, users can plug their pens to their computers and save their experiences, stories, memories written on their journals. Personal Tech, Edward C. Baig states:

“Using special paper, you can write words and have the pen pronounce them, tap the pen against an included North American map, and Fly can bark out names of state capitals or play a few bars from the U.S., Mexican and Canadian national anthems. Or you can write various commands, You can sketch a calculator and use the pen to solve basic math problems.”

Television to another level

leave a comment »

Emotions that pass through the screen. Objects flying before your eyes. People who feel you can touch with your hands. All these are examples of 3D movies. Now, not only movies have this characteristics, TV programs too.

LG banking on an Innovative Q&A Widget to infuse life into 3D TV.

The new three-dimensional television is now available for the public. These televisions works with techniques of 3D presentation, such as stereoscopic capture, multi view capture, and a 3D display. Many companies that create televisions have now 3D televisions. In order to watch your favorite programs in these new television sets you just need a 3D glasses and a channel that has a 3D version.

The only problem is that these TV’s have a very advanced technology, and not all cable companies have channels in 3D. There have been several notable examples in television where 3D episodes have been produced, typically as one hour specials or special events. Children and older people have also complained of headaches and eye irritation after watching a television program in these new 3D televisions. Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital opthalmologist Dr Lionel Kowal said that the number of viewers at risk from such harmful side-effects were greater than those suffering either diabetes or epilepsy.

This new technology is amazing for our brains because we look things to another level but it can also be harmful to our eyes. We need to think in the side-effects before buying these expensive  3D televisions.

Sony Vegas, another program to edit videos

leave a comment »

Mac or PC, which one is better? People think PC’s are easier to use and more efficient, while others think Mac’s have the newest programs for computers. One of the most common programs used in Mac is Final Cut. This is a program to edit videos, sounds, photo slideshows, etc. It is very efficient and easy to use; but, what happen with the people who don’t have a Mac? Unfortunately, they can install Final Cut in a PC because it is a program exclusively for Mac.

But, don’t worry; PC also have an excellent program to edit videos called Sony Vegas. It is a non-linear video editing software. It was published by Sony Foundry, now it is run by Sony Creative Software. Vegas does not require any specialized hardware to run properly. This programs has been used in important broadcasters and films such as Paranormal Activity. It has been also used in music video productions, and TV shows.

There are four different versions of Sony Vegas; Sony Vegas Pro 0.7, Sony Vegas Pro, 0.8, Sony Vegas Pro 0.9, Sony Vegas Pro 10. Sony Vegas is a very easy program to use; you can edit more than two videos at the same time, more than 5 audios, and hundreds of pictures at the same time.

Sticky Spider Robot

How nature works is one of the biggest questions for many scientists. They have been working to develop a solution for every single problem humans have. They create machines that facilitate our existence here in this planet. One of the most recent discoveries is the Sticky Spider Robot. This creation was based on the insects’ abilities. Research engineer Harsha Prahlad told BBC World Service’s Digital Planet programme

“What we’ve invented is a way to induce charges on the wall using a power supply located on the robot,”

These robots act as spiders. They can climb walls and not fall in the floor. The robots were created by a team in SRI’s Mobile Robotics and Transducers Programme. They substituted spiders’ Scopulae on their legs with  materials that use charges  created by electrotastic forces in order to stay attached to the walls. Mr Prahlad also stated;

“Inside these tracks are materials with electro-adhesive properties, which mean that when a current is applied, the tracks are attracted to the wall, preventing the robots from falling off.”

To think is not a human quality anymore

leave a comment »

Technology is advancing everyday. With this advance many experiments have been developed. Scientists want to develop a robot with human capacities. This idea sounds impossible to believe for many of us but not for James Martin who believes that in the future, computers will be more intelligent than humans. Computers will be capable to diagnostic mental problems. They will use artificial intelligent and they will be able to reason for themselves.

People is scared that one day robots control the planet. This sounds crazy, this just happens in movies; but, futurists are creating machines that can do things that humans cannot. Right now, we have ATM machines that can count money much more faster than humans. We have computers with a huge memory capacity and you can save millions of documents. We have computer programs that can put effects in pictures, videos, images that humans cannot. All these examples are technology that already exist. Are we close to a totally robotic era? The answer is relatively obvious. With the advance of this machines humans became independent of all this technology.

Now a days we don’t need to wash the dishes because we have dish washers. We don’t have to travel long distances to see someone because we have skype. We are becoming more and more technology dependent. This demonstrates that one day we will need a robot that thinks for us.

Human brains vs memristors

leave a comment »

The repeating image on the blue background tipped off the Nist research team about the flexible device's potential as a memristor.

Techology is advancing very fast, humans are creating amazing things. We dont need to memorize phone numbers because we have our cellphones with a huge memory to save as many numbers as we want. We dont need to remember important data becasue our computers can save as many data as we pleased; but a memory that remember and act according to pass patterns of data is something amazing.

Senior fellows of, Stanley Williams said:

HP For example, a memristor circuit could be capable of telling a microwave the heating time for different food types based on the information it has collected over time.

The memristor uses less energy and less time. It is a power saver product. Besides of resistor, capacitor, and inductor, memritors is the fourth fundamental circuit element.

It is as fundamental to electronic engineering as a chemical element is to chemistry or an electron is to physics,” Williams said.

This extraordianry techology is still being developed. This idea has been in the market for many years but now HP builders have improved the idea of the circuit, and they continue developing this memory resistor. The memristo is only availble for academic porpuses but William said than the circuit will be available for commercial factors in couple of years.

Success?…or Failure?

leave a comment »

Who doesn’t have a cell-phone now day? Almost everybody has one. Poeple are not longer using their cell-phones to call or text; now, people use their cell-phones to check their emails, to navigate on the internet, to get inform of important news, etc. Improvements in smart phones are more common everyday. We have a new cell-phones out there before you can get the last version.

The new iPhone 4g is an example of new technology. The features of this new iPhone 4g are amazing. This smart phone includes videocamara conversations, now you can not only talk on the phone you can actually watch what people are doing while they are talking to you on the phone. The screen has more resolution 960×640 pixels. The apparence of this new iPhone is different from the other iPhones versions. Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, described this iPhone:

It’s a big jump from old models. This is undoubtedly the most beautiful products I have made.

But this new wonderful iPhone is not only success, consumers have reported defects with the iPhone 4g. Some common defects are the signal, the screen, and the network. Some people have claim that the signal disappears when they hold the phone in their palms. They also claim that their screens get a yellow decoloration, and that their software has a big problem.

This video is a real example of this problems in the new iPhone 4g

This issue does not end there. Many companies are given thousands of iPhones 4g to testers. They give free iPhones in order to consumers to check these new phones and give their comments and opinions about them. A new free iPhone with defects or witout!!!…who doesn’t want it?
